About the Choir

Spezzati was formed in January 2003 at Royal Holloway College, part of the University of London, initally under the name Musica Spezzati. The premise for the creation of a new choir came through a mutual desire by its three founder members to create a versatile choir capable of producing a variety of music to the highest possible standard, in both a sacred and secular role.

Spezzati was formed in January 2003 at Royal Holloway College, part of the University of London, as a choir capable of producing a variety of music to the highest possible standard, in both a sacred and secular role. Concentrating mainly on the provision of music within liturgical settings as well as performing regularly in concert, the choir is establishing an enviable reputation, both in the church and concert hall. With a constantly expanding repertoire that embraces many styles and periods from the 16th to 21st centuries, they are recognised as being a group of deeply committed performers, capable of being expressive, stimulating, and able to look at standard repertoire with a fresh eye.

The choir has performed in many venues around London, including Hampstead Parish Church; St. George's Metropolitan Cathedral, Southwark; the Swiss Church, Covent Garden; and St James's, Sussex Gardens. Outside of the capital, it has performed in various venues across the south of the UK, including Holy Trinity, Broadstairs; St Michael's Church, Framlingham; as well as Winchester, Wells, Salisbury and Truro Cathedrals, and most recently Romsey Abbey.

The group takes its name from the Venetian Early Baroque method of cori spezzati, or divided choirs, for which groups of choristers sang in separate galleries in San Marco, resulting in impressive choral effects.

The choir also enjoys a good social aspect.
